Meal preparation is given priority
Unlike the urban traditions of preparing easy-to-pack meals for the children due to the hectic routines, the Japanese have a diligent meal structure for their children. This is to aid the efficient development of the immune system.
The mothers rise early and invest extra effort in designing meals for their children. They look into the aspect of food arrangement as well; so that the child is motivated to finish his/her lunch. Hence, the lunch box is elaborate and aesthetically arranged. The schools propagate this meal culture as well.
The Japanese pay extra attention to emotions and self-expression
To co-exist in a society, the Japanese believe in imbibing a sense of acceptance and respect for the emotions of others, apart from their own. The mothers equally respect their children and do not impose a sense of authority to correct their behaviour. They instead give the child a moral perspective.
For example, if a Japanese kid is seen to destroy a flower for absolutely no reason, the mother will induce a sense of emotion into the child. She will say things on the lines of “it can hurt the flower” or “the flower might feel miserable” to make their child differentiate between good or bad.
The children are also taught the art of self-expression at a young age and are always motivated to think about how their behaviour will affect other people. Thus, this has led to the kids maintaining a calm and peaceful attitude in crowded places or tough situations.
By now, you must have noticed some striking similarities and sharp differences between the parental model your culture and the Japanese follow. Obviously, the parental system has undergone some changes with the influence of the west, but the Japanese have never given up on their calm and loving demeanour. Their model has an ideal amount of empowering the child to be independent along with a moral base of cultured values and behaviours.
Goa Will Only Allow Wealthy Tourists
Goa Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar has told the press that the state will have to re-invent its tourism profile and return to the 1960s to rebuild itself as a tourism destination.
The minister also said that tourists who are into drugs, cook on the roads, or are an inconvenience on the beaches, are not wanted in Goa. Only tourists who are wealthy and can honour Goa’s culture and beauty are desirable.
The hippie community put Goa on the international tourism map in the 1960s. By and by, Goa’s reputation is one of the best tourism destinations in India reached its climax after 2007 due to the introduction of liberal licensing in casinos. However, the state infrastructure just could not grow with the growing number of tourists every year.
Ajgaonkar said that Goa’s tourism industry has to start again from zero to reach the desired level with the help of state-state level travel. However, this would only be possible when a cure is invented to counter COVID-19.
Ajgaonkar also said that wealthy tourists will be given preference over budget and local tourists. The idea behind taking such measures is to bring about the Goa of the 1960s, when it was beautiful. In comparison, Goa as we see today, is more crowded with millions of tourists visiting each year.
Goa, a state which is heavily dependent on tourism, is gearing up for the new normal wherein visitors will be allowed but selectively. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was quoted saying,
“After Lockdown 3, movement along inter-state routes via bus and train as well as by flights should be allowed, but with restrictions, especially because Goa, a COVID-free green zone is flanked on both sides by Karnataka and Maharashtra, with a high incidence of cases.”
He further added, “What we are trying to do along with experts, is to take Goa back to the 1960s. We do not want tourists who consume drugs, cook on our roads, or who create nuisance on beaches. We want good tourists who are wealthy and who can appreciate Goa and its culture.”
According to The Times of India, Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar reiterated the sentiment and The Statesman quoted him saying, “We have to recreate the Goa of the 1960s to kickstart our tourism again. In the 1960s, Goa was beautiful and now in 2020 it is very different with more than 8 million visiting tourists.”
When you live in India, you kinda sorta just get used to politicians making silly (read: borderline offensive) comments. Arre woh kuch bhi bolta hai, is the automatic response I usually get from people and one, I’m also guilty of uttering.
Well, time to add another one to that list – Goa’s Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar.
On 1 May, Goa, as you may have heard, declared zero COVID-19 cases. Unfortunately, Goa’s Green Zone status is currently under threat as seven fresh COVID-19 positive cases were detected on 14 May.
But let’s take a moment to focus on what Mr Ajgaonkar did soon after Goa was declared COVID-free. According to the news agency IANS, Ajgaonkar said:
“We want good tourists who are wealthy and who can appreciate Goa and its culture.”So, Mr Ajgaonkar wants to kickstart Goa’s tourism economy (okay, fair enough!) BUT he only wants the help of “wealthy” tourists because apparently they are the only ones capable enough to appreciate Goa’s culture?!
Now that one statement of his is problematic on so many levels.
Firstly – what is a “wealthy” tourist and how exactly do you plan on defining it?
Are you saying that anyone who can’t afford to spend 5 nights at Taj Fort Aguada does not deserve the opportunity to vacation in Goa?Moreover, the idea that somehow only “wealthy” tourists can “appreciate” Goa’s culture is also extremely classist.
Goa’s culture belongs to all its people – regardless of their socio-economic strata – and Manohar Ajkgaonkar is NO ONE to discriminate.

It’s natural to find things tough, however you identify. “Introversion and extroversion are not binary concepts,” she says. “Many of us flick between them depending on our mood, environment and the people surrounding us. The key is to work out how to attain the right balance in your lifestyle to support your mental health.”This was supposed to be the moment for introverts—the disaster preppers of our new, COVID-ravaged social lives. Those who cherished their time alone at home were already experts at voluntary self-isolation. Once, backing out of a happy hour at a bar to reading a book made you a bad friend. Now it’s patriotic.
In a TikTok from early March with 1.8 million views, an introvert watches the news, singing along with Phil Collins as the media tells him to stay home and avoid people. Introverts have published expert guides to staying at home and meditations on the joy of “flaking” on social plans. In the Atlantic, Andrew Ferguson wrote that covid isolation has “relieved considerable pressure on the introvert community,” the longtime “hopeful practitioners of antisocial distancing.”
But as people began to adjust to isolation, they started to find ways to bring their outside social lives into their homes. Living rooms that were once a sanctuary from people-filled offices, gyms, bars, and coffee shops became all those things at once. Calendars that had been cleared by social distancing suddenly refilled as friends, family, and acquaintances made plans to sip “quarantine” at Zoom happy hours, hold Netflix viewing parties, or just catch up over Google hangouts. People are coping with the coronavirus pandemic by upending their lives and attempting to virtually re-create what they lost. The new version, however, only vaguely resembles what we left behind. Everything is flattened and pressed to fit into the confines of chats and video-conference apps like Zoom, which was never designed to host our work and social lives all at once. The result, for introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between, is the bizarre feeling of being socially overwhelmed despite the fact that we’re staying as far away from each other as we can.
