Guru Nanak Jayanti 2019:The Most Holiest Sikh Festival
Guru Nanak Jayanti 2019: Is Also known as Gurupurab, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated across the globe to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, and is considered one of the pious festivals of the Sikh community.
This year, Gurupurab coincides with the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the first of the 10 Sikh gurus as both are on 12th December.
Do you know that according to the Hindu mythological calendar, Gurupurab ie Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on the full moon day in the month of Kartik Puranmashi while, in the month of October and November, as the Gregorian calendar suggests?
But some ancient scholars also believe that the birth anniversary of the Sikh Guru should be celebrated on 14 April, according to the original Nanakshahi calendar passed by Sri Akal Takht in 2003
Being defined by his spirituality and devotion to the Divine, Guru Nanak Dev was a man of peace who had spent his entire life emphasising on equality and tolerance. He was born in a village which is called Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, presently popular as Nankana Sahib, near Lahore in Pakistan.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji also played an instrumental role in setting up various spiritual, social and political platforms, which were constituted on the principles of quality, goodness and virtue.
A three-day festival, Gurupurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations begin with Prabhat Pheris which are the early morning processions at the gurudwaras and then proceed to the localities with Sikh devotees singing hymns. It is led by Panj Pyaras or Nagarkirtan (the five beloved ones), who used to carry the Sikh flag, known as the Nishan Sahib and the palanquin of Guru Granth Sahib.
Usually two days prior to the Gurupurab, an Akhand Path is held or the 48-hour non-stop reading of Guru Granth Sahib – the holy text where the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev are preserved is being organised at the Gurdwaras. Some of the popular prayers include Japji Sahid and Sidh-Ghost.
The holy book of the Sikhs also entails the sayings of all the 10 gurus.
On the main day of the occasion, devotees used to wake up early in the morning and sing Asa-di-Var and other morning hymns from the Sikh scriptures.
In the Gurudwaras, priests usually recite poems in praise of Guru Nanak Dev. Langar or free community lunch is served in the afternoon to celebrate life and prophecy of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Gatka, a special type of martial art is being performed by the people on this occasion with a sword.
Gurupurab was celebrated with fiesta and exuberance in the national capital on Tuesday, 12 November, as devotees flocked gurudwaras to pay obeisance to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, on his 550th birth anniversary.
People offered early morning prayers at shrines, which were all decked and adorned with bright lights and flowers and as well as partook in langars and Shabad kirtans.
A number of programmes were also planned and organised to mark the occasion. Volunteers further set up a free health-checkup programme and offered some stalls with spiritual books in the premises of the Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib.
Devotees also paid homage at the historic Gurdwara Ber Sahib ahead of the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru.
The highly revered Gurdwara Ber Sahib is the place where Guru Nanak got enlightenment at the end of the 15th Century. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had paid obeisance at the shrine later during the day.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur were also present.
The Sikh community around the world has been revelling in the festivities on the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Gurudwaras around the world have been adorned up with beautiful lights. Devotees, in large numbers, have joined the processions and kirtans.
Today’s morning, several Sikh devotees flocked to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi. The Gurudwara is known for its association with the 8th Sikh Guru, Guru Har Kishan. It was decorated with beautiful lights.
On the pious occasion of Gurupurab, several devotees gathered at Ber Sahib Gurudwara, in Sultanpur Lodhi in Punjab.
The good folks at Air India also have also made an attempt to commemorate the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Their national carrier has printed ‘Ek Onkar’ symbol on the tail of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
A one-of-a-kind mural shows the holy symbol imprinted on the tail of the aircraft in a yellow hue. And that’s not all: Air India has also launched a direct flight from Amritsar too
Gurupurab celebrations have also reached Birmingham, UK. The metropolitan city hosted festivities organised by the Midland Langar Seva Society (MLSS), a charity for the homeless, in the UK. MLSS had distributed food from the Guru Nanak Langar Bus on Soho Road, Birmingham from 10 am to 3 pm, local time.
However, the entire Sikh community was astonished to see a few days before the 550th birthday of the first Sikh Guru, was a video showing a bunch of Sikh devotees at the Great Wall of China, singing in harmony all the Shabd kirtan with a harmonium and a tabla.
This special heartwarming video went viral on the Internet in no time as netizens lauded the sheer devotion of the Sikhs who were spreading positivity at the ancient wall.
This video was tweeted by a user, Harnidh, who was already in Beijing when she came across this particular scene. Harnidh, whose Twitter bio reads, ‘lost-ish in China’, joked that it was one of the ways of getting over homesickness. Several other people were also seen in the video enjoying the soulful voice of the singers.

It’s not the moment, honestly … (to) think today about the 20th,” and went on to say, “Roland Garros means everything to me. I spent, here, the most important moments — or most of the most important moments — in my tennis career, no doubt about that.”
At the moment he is ranked second, after his French Win. But if Djokovic won this season then the trio, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic will be standing at 20-19-18. But with Nadal’s win, it brought him closer to break another historic record.

- Deepika Padukone was questioned by NCB for 5 long hours where she accepted that the part related to WhatsApp group but denied drug consumption. NCB did not give the nuances of the interrogation.
- Krishnma Prakash is the former manager of Deepika Padukone who was part of the WhatsApp group where procuring hash was discussed.
- Sara Ali Khan’s name got involved with this drug case when Rhea Chakroborty claimed that Sara Ali Khan used to consume drugs along with her and SSR. When interrogated Sara Ali Khan denied consuming drugs but revealed that she dated the late actor briefly during their “Kedarnath” Shoot.
- Kshitij Prasad is a former producer of Dharmatic Entertainment – a sister concern of Dharma Productions was arrested in FIR 16/2020 of NCB Mumbai zonal unit. He was supposedly involved with the major drug peddlers of Mumbai region. When interrogated by NCB, Prasad stated that he only used to procure drugs for his own consumption.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) released a statement saying that the interrogation and the answers of the actors cannot be revealed, it will be directly submitted in the court. “The actresses have denied taking drugs. We may serve them a summons for further questioning if we find new evidence. Their questioning is over for now,” and that they think there might be a link between Shraddha Kapoor’s and Sara Ali Khan’s case. All the actors have denied using any form of drugs, they even went ahead to claim that they do not even indulge in the activity of smoking.
